I’ve been lucky to meet amazing drummers like John Blackwell, Thomas Pridgen, Larnell Lewis, Jim Riley, Peter Erskine, Sonny Emory, and many more. And working with these high profile artists that are known for being the best in the business, there’s a recurring theme that I hear every single time: they use their ears at a higher level than anyone else – and that’s what gets them so much work, and so much success.

Instead of focusing on what they’re playing, they’re listening to the rest of the band. Instead of creating a bunch of noise and expecting others to follow, they’re listening and reacting accordingly. And away from the drum set, they are passionate about listening to songs and studying music history.

So I wanted to share what I’ve learned with you. I’ve been inspired to be more intentional to really listen to the music and make sure that what I’m playing isn’t just random noise, but instead actually compliments the band, or the play-along. And I’d like to encourage you, too, to approach your drumming with your ears – it will help you make better musical choices, get hired more, and be a more successful musician.
