I think my worst drumming “habit” is not being consistent about practice time invested.

So I’ have a lot of bad habits to break. I have to learn to practice with the metronome. I have an app in my phone and I just can’t seem to get my beat to sync with it. Another is slouching while playing….and a lot more.
I appreciate your effort on making tutorial videos that help drummers all around the world. I’ve learned a lot from you though I’m from the Philippines. Thank you 🙂

I am 62 but brand new to playing a kit. My worst bad habit is constantly leading with my left hand stick. I don’t know if it’s related, but I get my bass drum foot mixed up (right foot and then switch over to left foot. Am I that uncoordinated? Should I switch to a left hand kit setup? Or, is there a tip to get me the muscle memory I need to play a set?

I’m now 42 y/o and I took some drumming lessons at 17 while i was in college but stopped playing after. 4 years ago, I bought the RockBand game/kit (with the ”toy” drum kit) on Xbox which kinda sparked back my love for drumming. Then my friend who had a Yamaha DTX drum kit plugged in to RB with a MIDI adapter landed me his drum kit for a couple of months and THAT really fueled me! So much that the day I had to give it back, I went out and bought the same Yamaha DTX 500 kit with standalone hi-hat stand and double kick pedals for over $1000.00. That was a huge investment for me and I did not waste it. Been playing the kit for over 4 years now and still love doing it (side note: extremely depressed by RB4 not supporting E-KITS at launch and not knowing if they ever will. BIG mistake on their part in my opinion).

Here is my biggest bad habit … So far I only played my kit while playing RB and now that I can play most (400+) of the RB songs I have at expert level with with a range of 95% to 100% result, I have a growing desire to just play my kit without using RB songs and it’s very discouraging because every time I try the following happens:
– I tend to freeze because I don’t have any visual cues for notes without RB.
– I suddenly feel like a beginner again who doesn’t know how to play at all even if I can do pretty hot stuff on RB.

This is a habit that built itself over a 4 years period and I’m REALLY lost as to how to break it !!! Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Other smaller bad habits that I’m working on:
– tendency to slouch my back while playing. not keeping my back straight unless I really focus on it which hurts my concentration on the notes to play.
– tendency to open my left hand whenever I have to do a very quick double snare note (using the rebound effect) which throws off my whole hand position.

My response about Casey’s comment on ”watching other drummers play and telling yourself … I’ll never be able to play that”.

When I started playing RB, There was soooooo many songs that I thought were insane and I kept saying to myself that I would never be able to play them. Over time as I was building my memory muscles without really noticing it, I managed to progress so much that today I have no problem playing them. Yes, only on RB but still, I think it still makes sense for me to say that we should never see something as impossible to play no matter how hard it looks like today. After all If one person managed to play it before why would you not be able to do it as well one day 🙂

Keep up the good work guys!
Eric

Just fun practice wherein new avenues are explored. I fall into the trap of practicing song lists in preparation for shows and miss out on the fun sometimes.

I feel your pain sir. Having been born left handed I still lead from the left on many things. Luckily for me I went to a Catholic school where I was smacked on the hand with a ruler every time I would go to pick up the pencil with my left hand. So a nod to the nuns who started my conversion to right handedness?

I find when I do, my playing is a lot more lazy and my balance is all off when trying to hit the bass and then lifting off the hi-hat.

I have tried setting up my kit left handed and I feel so uncordinated that I get frustrated and switch back to right hand again. I wish you had more totally left handed drummers on your programs.

And avoiding my school homework and playing my kit instead!!!
